Along Came A Spider

Songs & Poems

Little Spider
Tune
: " Itsy Bitsy Spider"

See the little spider
Climbing up the wall,
See the little spider
Stumble and fall.

See the little spider
Tumble down the street,
See the little Spider
Stop down at my feet.

I'm A Little Spider
Tune: I'm a Little Teapot

I'm a little spider watch me spin
If you'll be my dinner
I'll let you come in
Then I'll spin a web to hold you tight
And gobble you up in ONE BIG BITE
Crawl Like a Spider
Tune:  "Ten Little Indians"
From The Mailbox

Crawl, crawl, crawl
like a spider.
Crawl, crawl, crawl
like a spider.
Crawl, crawl, crawl
like a spider.
Crawl around your web.

Replace the action word with:
jump, run, creep, sneak, hop
The Spider Spins a Web
Tune: The Farmer In the Dell
From The Mailbox

The spider spins a web,
The spider spins a web,
Round, round, up and down,
The spider spins a web.

Additional verses:
She spins it in and out.
She spins it back and forth.
She spins it good and strong.

Ten
Little Spiders
Tune: Ten Little Indians

One spider up and two spiders down.
Three spiders turn around and 'round
Four spiders smile, and then they frown.
Oh, what a wonderful sight!

Five spiders in and six spiders out.
Seven spiders spin around about.
Eight spiders climb the waterspout.
Oh, what a wonderful sight!

Nine spiders each have eight little legs.
Ten spiders lay little spider eggs.
All spiders wiggle their little legs.
Oh, what a wonderful sight!

There's A Spider On the Floor

There's a spider on the floor, on the floor.
There's a spider on the floor, on the floor.
Who could ask for any more
Than a spider on the floor?
There's a spider on the floor, on the floor.

There's a spider on my leg,
on my leg.
There's a spider on my leg,
on my leg.
Oh it's really really big
This old spider on my leg.
There's a spider on my leg,
on my leg.
Now the spider's on my stomach, on my stomach.
Now the spider's on my stomach, on my stomach.
Oh he's just a dumb old lummock
This old spider on my stomach.
Now the spider's on my stomach, on my stomach.

Now the spider's on my head, on my head.
Now the spider's on my head, on my head.
Oh I wish that I were dead,
I've got a spider on my head!
Now the spider's on my head, on my head.
And he jumps off! ....
Now there's a spider on the floor, on the floor.
The Itsy Bitsy Spider

The itsy bitsy spider
Went up the water spout
Down came the rain
And washed the spider out.
Out came the sun and
Dried up all the rain
And the itsy bitsy spider
Went up the spout again!

We love to choose 2 adjectives to sing in place of "itsy bitsy".  (big and hairy,  small and creepy, blue and red etc!!)

The Spider
Tune: "Twinkle, Twinkle  Little Star"

There's a spider on the wall
If he's careful he won't fall
He moves slowly down the wall
I can watch him crawl and crawl
I wonder if he minds my stare
Or does he know and just not care!

Five Little Spiders

(Children wear spider rings to act out)

Five little spiders crawling all around.

The first one said,
“See the bug I found?”

The second one said,
“My web is neat.”

The third one said,
“I have eight feet.”

The fourth one said,
“We’re all so small.”

The fifth one said,
“Time for autumn leaves to fall.”

Then whoosh went the wind and out went the light

And the five little spiders crawled out of sight!

One Spider Two Spiders
Tune:  One Potato Two Potato

One spider, Two spiders,
Three spiders, Four,
Five spiders, Six spiders,
Seven spiders. . .
NO MORE!

After learning this poem we make individual books.  I copy each line of the poem onto paper.   We make fingerprint spiders for each page (press finger on colored stamp pad, then add legs with colored pencils).   I put one color ink pad on each table and have the children rotate tables (and use a different finger!)   On the last page they draw a picture of how they would feel if they saw all those spiders!

Try an old favorite:

Little Miss Muffet
Sat on a tuffet
Eating her curds and whey.
Along came a spider
Who sat down beside her,
And frightened Miss Muffet away!

And a new one:

Little Miss Muffet
Sat on her tuffet
Eating her cookies three.
Along came a spider
Who sat down beside her,
And stayed with Miss Muffet for tea!

Books

Language Activities

Itsy Bitsy Spider Book

The itsy-bitsy spider
Crawled up on __________'s head.
It crawled all around
And made itself a bed.

It crawled down his back
And then down to the floor.
Then the itsy-bitsy spider
Crawled right out the door!

Make photocopies of this poem (one for each child).  Then take each child's picture, glue it onto their page, and then have the child draw a spider on their head (or use a small spider sticker) and write their name in the space provided.  Staple or bind the pages together and place it in your book center!

One Little Spider Went Out to Play

One little spider went out to play,
On a spider's web one day,
She had such enormous fun,
That she called for another spider to come!

Write the words on a pocket chart.  Add spider pictures and number word cards for the children to match the amount of spiders on the web.

Predictable Charts

Spiders look _________.

Have each child say a word to complete the sentence and write on chart paper.  Encourage different answers.  I like this chart because the children come up with many ideas (scary, hairy, black, ugly etc)  Then have each child illustrate their sentence and make it into a class book.

Read the story The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle.
After reading the story ask the children where the spider would like to go if she came into our classroom.  (October seems like the perfect time to do this since the children have been in the classroom for several weeks and have visited many of the centers.)  They will have ideas like block center, playdough center, the lunchroom etc.  Turn this idea into a class book by having the children ask the spider where she wants to play:

"Do you want to play in block center?" asked Bobby.
The spider didn't answer.  She was very busy spinning her web.

Have each child illustrate their sentence and staple together to make a class big book.

Letter Ss

Use a marker to draw a spider web on chart paper.  Have the children brainstorm words that begin with the letter Ss.  Write on the web.

Letter Matching

Use a large spider notepad.  Laminate each sheet.  On each sheet write an uppercase letter and the matching lowercase letter.  Cut each one apart using different cuts - straight,
zig-zag, wavy, etc.  To play the game have the children find the matching letters and put the pieces together.

Math Activities

Spider Ring Counting

Use a black marker to draw spider webs onto 8x8 pieces of oaktag (make 10 of them).  Write a numeral 1-10 in the center of each web.  Have the children identify the number in the center of the web and use spider rings to show how many.

Spider Leg Addition

Photocopy a  spider body onto black construction paper and laminate (do not copy the legs).  Place colored  toothpicks (legs) on either side of the spider body to show various combinations that make eight. For example place 3 legs on one side and 5 on the other side to make eight.

 Spider Graph

I a
lways introduce my spider unit with a graph
"Do You Like S
piders?"
  Yes or No
Each child is given a photocopied spider picture (hand drawn by me!) that does not have a face.  If they like spiders they draw a smile face if they don't they draw a sad face.  Then each child has a turn to place their spider on the graph and tell the class why they do or do not like spiders.

After learning about spiders and doing tons of activities, we end the unit with the same graph to see if any feelings have changed!
Sensory Table

Fill the sensory table with black and white crinkle paper (from a party supply store).  Add some plastic spider rings.  Have the children search for them and then count them!

Science Activities

Read the book Spiders to
find the answers and lots more about the fascinating world of spiders.  Then draw a large spider web on chart paper and write spider facts on it.

Spiders

Draw a spider onto a large piece of poster board.  Color and laminate.  Label the body parts of the spider.

Art Activities

Spider Eights

Cut out a large figure 8 from black construction paper.   Count out and glue 8 sequins onto the spider . . . add 2 green ones for the eyes.  Count out 8 pieces of black yarn for the legs.    Glue the legs  to the body.

Spider Marble Painting

Place an 8x8 inch square of black construction paper in a box lid.  Dip a marble in white paint and drop it onto the paper.  Roll the marble around by tilting the lid.  Repeat this step to create a spider web.  Add a spider sticker (and some tiny bug stickers).

Spider Web Rubbings

Use glue to make spider web designs on 10x10 pieces of poster board.  When dry, the children place a piece of paper on top and make rubbings with the side of a peeled crayon.  When finished they can draw spiders and bugs on their webs!
Painted Spiders

Have the children make spiders by painting their palms and fingers (no thumbs!) with black paint.  Have them press their hands onto construction paper two times so  that the palms overlap and the fingers go out in opposite directions.  When dry, add wiggle eyes.
Paper Plate Spider Webs

Use scissors to cut slits around the edges of a paper plate.  Give each child some yarn.  They weave the yarn back and forth to make a spider web.  Tie a spider ring at the end of the string when finished.  Then have the children draw flies on the plate that the spider has caught!

Spaghetti Spider Webs

Cook about 2 lbs. of spaghetti.  Let the spaghetti cool.  Then put it all in a large bowl with glue.  Let the kids mix it with their hands.  Then they pull individual strands of spaghetti out and design their web on a piece of wax paper.  (You might want to have a spider web pattern under the wax paper for children to follow).  When the web is dry,  peel the wax paper away from the web.  Add a spider ring in the center!

Paper Plate Spiders

Paint small paper plates black and let dry.  Give each child 8 black strips of paper and have them fold it accordian style.  Glue on for the legs.  Use scrap paper to add eyes.

Spider Recipes

Marshmallow Spiders

For each spider, use one large marshmallow for the body and one small marshmallow for the head (attach with 1/2 a toothpick).  Make eyes from mini M&Ms, legs from red licorice laces.  Cover with chocolate sauce, if desired.

Oreo Cookie Spiders

Use an Oreo for the body.  Attach 8 legs made from thin black licorice.
Peanut Butter Cracker Spiders

Make 2 "sandwiches" from 4 Ritz crackers spread with peanut butter.  Lay them side-by-side on a plate, sticking them together with more peanut butter.  Attach peanuts or raisins for eyes, and make legs from pretzels.
Spider Sandwiches

Ingredients:

2 s
lices of bread ( use raisin bread!)
1 T Strawberry cream cheese
8 Raisins
8 Pretzel Sticks
1 piece of black string licorice

You will also need:
1 paper plate
1 plastic knife
Measuring spoons
round biscuit cutter

Directions:

Cut bread into circles with biscuit cutter.
Measure and spread cream
cheese on one piece of bread.
Place the other bread circle on top.
Put the 8 raisins on the top piece of bread for eyes.
Place 4 pretzels coming out of each side for legs.
Add licorice string at the top
to look like your spider's drag line.

Miss Spider's Tea Party

On Halloween Day we have a Miss Spider's Tea Party instead of having a Halloween Party.  We read and reread Miss Spider's Tea Party and all of her stories (below).  All week we prepare for the celebration.  Keep reading to find out all of the fun activities we do on this day.

After reading Miss Spider's Tea Party each child chooses the character they want to be for the party by placing their name on a graph - oh, and the teacher always gets to be Miss Spider!

After choosing, each child decorates a headband to represent their insect.

Then we:

Have an Iced Tea Taste Test

I buy flavored iced teas and each of my "little bugs" gets to taste them and graph their favorite type.
Make & Eat Oreo Cookie Spiders

Use an Oreo cookie for the body.  Attach 8 legs made from thin black licorice. Use green gel frosting to attach 2 green eyes on the Oreo.  Eat and enjoy!
Spin a Spider Web

We all sit in a circle. I hand a ball of yarn to one student and have them roll it to another student.  Holding the yarn firmly, that student rolls the yarn to another child.  We repeat this until everyone has had a turn and we have a big spider's web.
Then we sing this song:

Miss Spider's In The Web
Tune:  The Farmer In The Dell

Miss Spider's in the web,
Miss Spider's in the web
Spin, spin, oh watch her spin,
Miss Spider's in the web.

Miss Spider invites a (bug name)
Miss Spider invites a _________.
Spin, spin, oh watch her spin,
Miss Spider's in the web.

Of course, the teacher always gets to be Miss Spider!   The children come sit on the web as we sing the different bug names they  are pretending to be.

Here is a picture of all the treats we eat at Miss Spider's Tea Party!
