Homemade Gingerbread
Stir a bowl of gingerbread,
Smooth and spicy and brown
Roll it with a rolling pin
Up and up and down.
With a cookie cutter,
Make some little men.
Put them in the oven.
Till half past ten.

Gingerbread Man Song
Tune: "The Muffin Man"
Oh, do you know the Gingerbread Man,
The Gingerbread Man,
The Gingerbread Man?
Oh, do you know the Gingerbread Man,
Who ran and ran and ran?
He said, "Catch me if you can,
If you can, if you can."
He said, "Catch me if you can,"
Then ran and ran and ran.
I can run like
the Gingerbread Man.
The Gingerbread Man,
The Gingerbread Man.
I can run like
the Gingerbread Man,
Now catch me if you can!! |
A Gingerbread House We'll Make
Tune: A Hunting We Will Go
A gingerbread house
we'll make,
A gingerbread house
we'll make,
With bread, frosting,
and some treats
A gingerbread house
we'll make.
Let's roll out the dough,
Let's roll out the dough,
We'll cut out a house shape
A gingerbread house we'll make.
We'll squirt on the frosting.
We'll squirt on the frosting,
Add some candy to decorate
A gingerbread house we'll make. |

Come Back Little Man!
Tune: Six Little Ducks
One gingerbread boy popped out one day
Over the hill he ran away.
When the man called
" Come back little man!"
He only answered,
"Catch me if you can!"
Repeat the verse, each time replacing the "man" with a
different character from the story - cow, horse,
threshers, mowers.
Last Verse:
One gingerbread boy popped out one day
Over the hill he ran away.
Then the fox called,
"Hop on my nose little man!
I'll gobble you up as fast as I can!" |
Gingerbread Baby
Tune: Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Little
Dog Gone?"
Oh where, oh where is the Gingerbread Baby?
Oh where, oh where has he gone?
(He pranced around the big blue bowl.)
And then he ran on and on!
Repeat the verse 4 times, replacing the underlined words
with the following phrases:
He climbed right up the garden wall.
He stopped to get a drink from the well.
He jumped off the bridge and onto the ice.
He jumped up and tweaked the milkman's nose.
Finish the song with this final verse:
Oh where, oh where is the Gingerbread Baby?
Oh, do you think that you know?
He clapped his hands and ran right in
to his gingerbread house in the snow. |

Ideas for Predictable Charts
"Stop, stop!" said (student name).
But the Gingerbread Man said:
"Run, run, as fast as you can,
You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!"
OR
"Run, run, as fast as you can,
You can't catch (student name),
She's (He's) the Gingerbread Girl (Boy)!"
After
making and tasting gingerbread cookies you can do the
following charts:
My gingerbread cookie looks _______________ .
Gingerbread cookies taste _____________ .
The gingerbread man ran from the _________" |

Who Stole the Cookies from the Cookie
Jar?
Sit in a circle and chant
"Who stole the cookies from the cookie jar?"
Who stole the cookies from the cookie jar?
Mrs. Ballingall stole the cookies from the cookie jar!
Who, me?
Yes, you!
Couldn't be!
Then who?
Write the poem on sentence strips and put in the pocket
chart,
leaving a blank where the person's name goes.
Make a class set of names
for the kids to use in reading the chart.
Also, use the same frame to make a class book.
It's a great way to help them learn to read each other's
names. |

Letter Matching Game
Program gingerbread man notepads (Carson Dellosa has
cute ones!) with uppercase letters and lowercase
letters. Use the large notepad for the uppercase letters
and the smaller notepad for the lowercase letters. To
play the game the children match the upper and lowercase
gingerbread. |
|
Beginning Sound Matching Game
Program a gingerbread cutout with an initial consonant
or vowel. Program gumdrop cutouts with a picture (or
sticker) of something that begins with that sound. To
play, the children match the correct gumdrop and
gingerbread man.
I made this one as an Upper / Lowercase match game.

versions of The Gingerbread Man.
Find out which characters appear in the most versions.
-OR-
Make a class graph of each child's favorite version. |

Button Games
Cut out 10 Gingerbread Men from brown
construction paper or use 10 sheets of a Gingerbread Man
notepad.
Laminate. Number each Gingerbread Man
1-10.
Have the children use buttons and put the correct
amount on each Gingerbread Man.
-OR-
Write color words on each Gingerbread Man and have the
children place the matching colored buttons on the
Gingerbread Man.

person with the highest number begins the game.

|
Cookie Counting
I used baby
food jars as my "cookie jars". Label them 1 - 10.
Have the children count out Gingerbread Man erasers
and
place the correct amount into each cookie jar. |
|
Gingerbread Matching
File Folder Game
Print out
an instant Gingerbread Matching Game from
Preschool Printables. |
|
Gingerbread Match
I found
this game years ago so I do not know where the copies
come from.
The children make matches with the
gingerbread features.

Fun Gingerbread Cookie Graph
Here is a fun idea if you make gingerbread cookies with
your kids!
Give each child a gingerbread cookie and a
gingerbread cutout.
Have the children all take one bite of their gingerbread
cookie.
Ask them where they bit their cookie first. Was it
the head? arm? leg?
Have each child use scissors to cut off that part of
their gingerbread cutout
and then color it and write their name. Make it
into a class graph:
What part of your Gingerbread cookie did you eat first?
|
I ate the head first |
I ate the arm first |
I ate the leg first |
| |
|

Gingerbread
Playdough
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 cup water
1 tsp. vegetable oil
Spices: cinnamon, allspice, ginger, nutmeg,
DIRECTIONS:
Mix the dry ingredients.
Mix the spices until you get the scent and color you
want.
Mix water and oil together.
Add them to the dry ingredients.
Stir.
Cook the mixture for two to three minutes, stirring
frequently. The dough will start to pull away from the
sides of the pan and clump together.
Take the dough out and knead it until it becomes soft
and smooth. Cool.
Store in an air tight container. |

Gingerbread
Boys and Girls
Have the children trace large gingerbread man tracers
onto oaktag. Cut out. Paint brown.
Dry. The next day have the children add the
features. White "Scribbles" paint (puffy paint)
looks great for the frosting around the edges. I
also have candy available for buttons. Pastel
colored chalk also makes great "frosting". To
display, cover your bulletin board with aluminum foil
(cookie sheet) and place the gingerbread boys and girls
on it. |
