Songs & Poems

Everybody Has a Name

Everybody
Has a name.
Some are different,
Some, the same.
Some are short,
Some are long.
All are right,
None are wrong.
My name is ___________,
It's special to me.
It's exactly who
I want to be!
I'm Glad I'm Me

No one looks
The way I do.
I have noticed
That it's true.
No one walks the way I walk.
No one talks the way I talk.
No one plays the way I play.
No one says the things I say.
I am special.
I am me.
There's no one else
I'd rather be!

Oh, oh, oh, oh,
Gather round
It's time to get acquainted
Sing this song
I'll show you how it's done.

Look At Me And Remember

Look at me, look at me,
Remember me, remember me,
What am I wearing?
What am I wearing?
Look at me, look at me.
Everyone's Important
Tune: Have You Ever Seen A Lassie?

(Student's name) is important, important, important.
(Student's name) is important to me and to you.
In work and in play
He (she) does his (her) best each day.
(Student's name) is important to me and to you.
Stand Up Children
Tune:  Where is Thumbkin?

Stand up (child's name),
Stand up (child's name),
Stand up (child's name),
Stand up (child's name).
Reach up very high now;
Reach up to the sky now
Then sit down, then sit down

(repeat to include all children)

Activities

First Week of School Predictable Chart

During this activity each child completes a predictable sentence that I write on a chart.   A great one for "Getting to Know You" is:

My name is _________ and I like____________.

Days 1 & 2: The children dictate sentences and touch read them. Children are invited to tell what they notice about various sentences and words.  Do half the class on Day 1 & half on Day 2.

Days 3 & 4:  Play sentence builders. Choose a sentence, write on a sentence strip, cut apart and put the words in the sentence in order.  Repeat with another sentence.

Day 5: The sentences are cut apart and given to each student author. The student places the words in order, illustrates them and glues the words to the page. Create a class book for the children to read in your Book Center.
Friend Pictures

On the first day of school use a digital camera to take a picture of each child and laminate them (we use ours all year!)

With the pictures you can:
*Print two of each child for a game of concentration.
*Hang them under the appropriate letter for the word wall.
*Sort them by boys and girls, color of hair, color of eyes etc.
*Take attendance (use on a pocket chart).
Star of the Day
p
1. Have each child's name written on a sentence strip cut to length of name.
Draw one out of a container/bag each day.

2. Cheer the name:

Give me a L!
Give me an U!
Give me a C!
Give me a Y!
What's that spell?
Lucy!

3. Add the student's name and picture to the word wall.

4. Notice things about the name. How many letters, any
double letters, any vowels, etc.

5. Ahead of time, make a sentence strip of each child's
name and one to cut up into letters. The child puts
his/her letters up on a pocket chart one at a time while the class
writes their name on a piece of paper the best they can!
Save these papers and the next time they are the star . . .

6. Look at the features of that person.
Allow children to make observations of the person like
Your eyes are brown.  Your hair is curly.
Draw a picture of the student (on the same paper as #5) .

7. Put those pictures together into a book and place it in the Book Center.
The kids LOVE these books!

I do not do all of these activities on the same day.  Each time the child is the helper we do a different activity, but in the same order I have written above.  The children absolutely love these activities . . . it definitely makes them feel special!!
Pass the Bear

Have the children sit in a circle. Play music (Dr Jean is always our favorite!) While the music is playing, pass around a stuffed bear (or any other stuffed animal).  When the music stops the student holding the bear has to say his/her name. Continue until everyone has had a chance to tell his/her name.
Bulletin Board Idea

Welcome to Kindergarten Where All the Pieces Fit
Take pictures with the digital camera on the first day of school and put a picture of each child on large construction paper puzzle pieces.
Getting to Know The Teacher Game

Fill a box up with things that tell about you. Choose children to take one item out of the box at a time.  Explain each item and why it is in there.
