Developmental Centers

In the afternoon the developmental centers are open in the classroom, as well as the literacy centers.  Working in the centers allows each child to work at their own pace, explore the activities that are most interesting to them, and to reinforce learning skills.  During developmental centers the children select any center to work in.  Each student has a clothespin with their name on it, which they place on a sticker on the center sign of their choice.  I allow students to move from center to center as long as there is a space for them.  The helper chooses his/ her center first.  Click on the name of the center to print out center signs from www.abcteach.com and www.preschoolprintables.com

Math Center

In this center children use a wide variety of manipulatives, including pattern blocks, Unifix cubes, links, various animal counter, colored cubes, and other hands-on materials to help develop their skills and experience in sorting, counting, patterning, addition, and subtraction.

Art Center

The art center gives children an opportunity to develop their creativity and express themselves.  Sometimes there is a project with materials out for them to do, but, most of the time there is a variety of materials out for them to explore with.

Block Center

In the block center, children develop problem solving skills, spatial development and fine motor skills.

Sensory Table

I try to rotate the materials in this center about every two weeks.  Some of the materials I fill it with are sand, rice, popcorn kernels, dried beans, flour, cereal and anything else that would be fun to play in!  Since I do not have a "real sensory table" I use a large plastic wrapping paper container that I bought at WalMart for about $12!!

Playdough Center

Here we really work on strengthening our fine motor skill by rolling, cutting, and forming things out of playdough or clay.  I rotate playdough toys such as cookie cutters and rolling pins.

Puzzle Center

We can never have enough puzzles in our classroom!  The children love any puzzle!  The especially love ones with a lot of pieces that we work on all wee.  I try to incorporate them with our themes.  The best place to buy puzzles . . . yard sales!!

Lego Center

This center gives the children the opportunity to enhance their fine motor skills, problem solving skills, balancing  and creativity.  I often add vehicles, animals and road signs to this center.
