Poem for Apple Thumbprint Pictures
These are Special apples,
Hanging on this tree,
I made them with my fingerprints,
They are part of me!
The children draw a tree on a piece of paper and I
help them use a red ink pad to press their
fingerprints on and then on the paper as "apples".
Then we glue a copy of the poem to the bottom of the
paper.

Apple Poem
This is a great math poem to use with your apple
unit! You can write one set the words on a pocket
chart, then cut another set for the children to match
the words. Have a supply of red, yellow, and green
apples also.
Ten Red Apples
Here I have five apples.
(hold up five fingers on right
hand)
And here are five again.
(hold up both hands)
How
many apples all together?
Why,
five and five make ten!

Apple ABC
Use an apple bulletin board border and label with the
uppercase letters A - Z. Laminate and hang on the
chalkboard ledge. To play the game the children use
clothespins with lowercase letters and clip onto the
matching letter on the border.

Patterning Activities
Make patterns using:
* red, yellow, and green apples
(I also use red and green bingo markers for the
children to make patterns with and then they draw
their own stems and leaves.)
*apples with stems or no stems
*apples with "boo-boos" or no "boo-boos"
*apples cut in half and dipped into red, yellow, or
green paint

Ten Apples Up On Top
After reading
Ten Apples Up On Top
give the children an 18"x 11" piece of
construction
paper cut in half and turned the "tall" way. Have
each child draw a picture of his/her face at the bottom.
Then give each child 10 small apples stickers to put on
top of their head/face that they drew at the bottom of
the page. |

Apple Taste Test
Provide small samples different types of apples. Tell
the children the type of apple before tasting each
one. I usually use Granny Smith, MacIntosh, and
Golden Delicious so we have green, yellow, and red
apples. After tasting the apples have the children
color
and write their name on a small apple shape.
Prepare a large class graph with the apple types.
Allow each child to share their favorite apple type
and place their apple cut out on the class graph.
Print your own graphs: (1)

After making the graph we make a book titled
"Our Favorite Apples".
I give each child a piece of white construction paper
with an eaten apple picture on it. The children rip
pieces of red, yellow, or green construction
depending on their favorite type. They glue the
pieces on the top and bottom of the apple. The middle
stays white and then we glue the seeds (from the apple
taste test) onto the center of the eaten apple.

Apples Make Sense!
Cut a large apple shaped journal from red, yellow or
green paper. Let the children add to it daily during
your apple unit apple.
As a final activity have them complete (or dictate to
you) the following in their journal:
Apples
Apples smell_________.
Apples look_________.
Apples feel_________.
Apples sound________.
Apples taste________.

Sorting
Provide a large number of various sizes and kinds of
apples. Use small baskets for the children to sort by
size, color, and type.
|

How Many Seeds?
Cut apples in half and allow children to dig out the
seeds. Have the children count the seeds from their
apples.
Who had the most ? Least? Equal amounts?
|
|
Apple Trees
Make
10 copies of a
tree pattern.
Color. In one corner write a numeral and place the
correct amount of apple stickers beside it. In the
other corner write the number word. Laminate. To
play the game children place the correct amount of
apple erasers on the apple tree.

Make 10 copies of an apple
picture or use a cute apple
notepad. Write one numeral (from 1-10) on each
apple. Laminate. To play the game children place the
apples in order from 1 -10. You can also have apple
seeds available and have the children count out the
correct amount of seeds to place on each apple.

Art Activities

Paper Plate Apples
Give each child a white paper plate. They can choose
to fingerpaint it red, yellow, or green. When it's
dry, we add green paper leaves, a brown stem,
and glue real apple seeds to the center.

Another Apple
Give each child a 10"x10" square of red, yellow, or
green construction paper. Have the children snip the
corners off (in little triangles), until the squares
become circles or ovals. To add leaves have small
green rectangles precut and, again, have the children
snip the corners off until they become an oval. Glue
on a brown stem.

Apple Prints
Cut several apples in half. I use red, green, and
yellow apples. Let the students dip the apples into
shallow containers of paint and press them onto a
white sheet of construction paper.

APPLE BAG
Fill up a small brown paper bag with crumbled up
newspaper. Twist the top to close (this will also be
the stem and painted brown). Paint the bag red,
yellow or green for an apple. Complete by adding
construction paper leaves.

Apple Tree
Give each child a piece of green construction paper,
this represents the leaves. Have the children rip
small pieces of red construction (these represent the
apples). Glue the red pieces onto the green to make
apple leaves. Have the children roll up the corners
of the green paper (to add a 3D affect). Make a trunk
by crumbling and uncrumbling up a large brown paper
bags. Staple the bags to the bulletin board and add
the apple leaves to the top.
